Zorro : A Novel

So, I realize I haven't written anything in awhile, so I felt I should give a brief update on my life.

My semester is over (horay!) and it feels fantastic.  I love not reading over two books a week.  I can now read whatever fun stuff I want, as well as watch silly TV like the Gilmore Girls, and go out to drink without feeling guilty.

This weekend was crazy- I hosted a BBQ on Friday.  It rained, but Seph and his friend insisted on grilling anyway.  It took forever to get the grill started, but once we did it was great.  Of course the rain tracked in a mess, ruining everything I cleaned, so I had to clean again Saturday morning.  Then I had to work a wedding from 4-midnight.  Then I got up early to watch the Dutch soccer game with Seph (Hup Holland!).  That night, Seph and I went to an Eels concert at the 9:30 club.  It was fun, but I was tired and got a headache at work (probably cause I got no sleep this weekend!).

Which brings me to work.  I'm no longer at Dumbarton House as an intern (but still doing events there).  I miss it, but I am at another good opportunity (and its necessary to do two internships for my degree).  I'm at The Smithsonian Associates, the outreach arm of the Smithsonian.  My division of that organization plans to programs that are across the country.  I'm planning two teaching workships (Lansing and Lafayette) which we sends scholars to.  They are giving me a big say in the educational content which is great.  I'm also planning an exhibit opening lecture series for one of our Affiliate Museums in Omaha.

In addition to the Smithsonian and Dumbarton House events, I'm also giving tours and working as a Graduate Student Assistant at GW.  Busy busy busy!

So, that's pretty much it for me.  It's going to be a good summer I think.  BHS grads- any of you going to our 5 year reunion in August?

Anthony reminded me that I meant to give a quick recap of my Spring Break in Disney World. . .so here goes!

I flew out of DC on Monday, leaving the warm 70 degree weather for even warmer 80 degree weather.  My aunt and cousin Alexandra picked me up at the airport, and we went back to the hotel to settle in and enjoy a quick dip at the pool.  My Aunt is a Disney Vacation Club member, so they stay at this snazzy timeshare type place, that has some beautiful pools, and a really great staff.  That night we traveled to the "Grand Floridian" for dinner with Cinderella and Prince Charming.  I got my picture with both.  When I told Prince Charming that this was my first time to DisneyWorld, he said "Welcome to my Kingdom," which I felt was a little presumptious of him.  After dinner we took the Monorail (one of my few memories of my trip to Disney Land as a youngster) and I saw the parks lit up at night.

Tuesday was spent at the Magic Kingdom.  We rode Space Mountain (another memory I still had) Buzz Lightyear (which I beat my Aunt's high score in shooting aliens!), Splash Mountain (by far my favorite ride at Magic Kindgom), Big Thunder Mountain, and the Hounted House.  We went back to the hotel in the afternoon for more pool, then returned to Magic Kingdom.  There we saw Philharmagic- belive me, if you are going to Disney- DO THIS.  It was really really neat.  Then I got to ride the teacups, where my cousins and I made them spin really fast.  Lastly was the parade, which was quite wel done.

Wednesday we slept in then went to Epcot, my least favorite of the parks.  I wasn't a big fan of the fakeness of it, but the one ride we rode "Soarin" was fun.  We ate in England, and my cousin got Japanses candy art made for her (in the shape of a Tiger).

Thursday was Animal Kingdom, probably my favorite.  We rode the new ride Expedition Everest twice in a row.  I was incredibly impressed with the line.  You go through all these Tibetan shops to "buy" your gear and book your tour.  Then you go through a fake museum exhibition of the Yeti.  It was amazing how they made the exhibit look homemade.  I loved it!  After that we did the Safari, which made my aunt mad cause we waited in line awhile.  So we split up after that, and I rode the Dinasour ride with my cousin, and then saw the Lion King show- also a huge highlight of the trip!

That night I went to dinner with Emily and Anthony (hi guys!).  I hadn't seen them since their wedding, so it was wonderful to hang out and catch up.  They didn't put a sparkler in our dessert, but oh well.  After dinner we walked around and enjoyed the weather (which they get to experience all the time- no fair!).

Friday was MGM.  Rode Rockin Roller Coaster, which was fun, and Tower of Terror, which was really fun.  Then we went to "Who Wants to be a Millionaire, where some kid got to the hot seat, cause he just punched in numbers really fast- not cool.  Afterwards we had lunch at "Prime Time Cafe" where you sit in 1950's kitchens.  Very nice decor, but they do the thing where the waiter is a jerk.  He kept poking me, and I got incredibly angry with him, making it hard to enjoy my lunch.

Then I had to leave!  I wish vacation could have lasted longer.  Came back to a 45 degree DC, and I had not jacket, so the trip home wasn't too spectacular.  Oh well.  We had beautiful weather this weekend.  Seph and I went to the Cherry Blossom festival, and it was one of my favorite days ever with him.  I will never forget it.

Back to studying (see above book).  Love you all.

"First Day Of My Life" Bright Eyes

This is the first day of my life
I swear I was born right in the doorway
I went out in the rain suddenly everything changed
They're spreading blankets on the beach

Yours is the first face that I saw
I think I was blind before I met you
Now I don’t know where I am
I don’t know where I’ve been
But I know where I want to go

And so I thought I’d let you know
That these things take forever
I especially am slow
But I realize that I need you
And I wondered if I could come home

Remember the time you drove all night
Just to meet me in the morning
And I thought it was strange you said everything changed
You felt as if you had just woke up
And you said “this is the first day of my life
I’m glad I didn’t die before I met you
But now I don’t care I could go anywhere with you
And I’d probably be happy”

So my Valentine's Day started out not so great- silly roomate sink issues, internship applications due in a matter of hours, and one of my letters of recommendation people flaked out on me, lots of schoolwork, etc.  It ended, however, fantastically.
I met Seph at Flatop (one of those create your own stir fry places).  They were having a special candlit dinner night, and the place was so romantic!  We even got one of those romantic round booths you see in movies.  He had a box of chocolates for my gift and paid for dinner, which I thought was all just perfect.
It didn't end there though.  We went to his place, and he was showing me the DVD player he had bought for the new apartment.  He gave me the remote and asked me if I wanted to turn it on.  I though, gee it's nice, but you're really showing off.  Then I turned in on, and the first season DVD of Grey's Anatomy starts playing!  It was such a nice surprise, and such a wonderful gift.  My first TV show on dvd ever.  An incredibly wonderful romantic night- but now I'm off to bed and then work tomorrow, life only lets you slow down for a moment.

I'm back in DC, which is great!  I'd forgotten how nice it is to have my own place.  I love my room, especially now that Seph helped me hang my black and white photographs from Europe.  I'm finally really feeling at home here.

And I also have great news.  Seph moves to DC on Saturday!  He came down last week, and  quickly found a great place out by the Ballston Metro Station (that's in Arlington, VA for non-DC folk).  It's a good location for him because it makes him closer to work.  It's a long trek for us to see eachother, but it's on the same metro line, and his apartment is literally across the street from the station (and from a mall- uh oh).  Also, it's a beautiful new high rise with an outdoor pool, excercise room, sauna, etc.  His roomate is a 22 year old who went to Carnegie Melon and is now a consultant for IBM.  I haven't met him, but he seems nice, and well-rounded with lots of interests.

As far as things are with me, good!  I've been keeping busy with getting ready for classes, training to run girl scout overnights at work, and hanging with friends.  Too bad school is going to start in a week, I'm getting used to this!
